To be frank, I didn't understand a single thing going on in this book, and that's what makes it genius. To read this, you must allow the story to pass through you, and not bother to dwell on finer points until the experience of the novel is over. The primary characters are metaphors for the mind-set the reader must inhabit to process the words within the pages of the book, and the entire process is intensely dreamlike.

A masterclass of storytelling, but as the book progresses the casual racism and sexism pervades the modern senses of a reader who is reading a piece that was not written for their time. Most women have little to no autonomy and exist only as wives, mothers and mistresses. An example of the way men view their macho manliness that is incredibly toxic. A compelling story of revenge and deceit.

An excellent return to YA by Holly Black. When not compared to it's predecessors, it stands strong in terms of plot and compelling-ness while paying tribute to the original story, however one cannot help but notice the differences between the original Trilogy. While the original was less-driven by magic and relied beautifully on political machinations, in this book the presence of deus ex machina does cause it to pale slightly in comparison. Nonetheless, a wonderful must read with delightful characters, especially if you are a fan of the Greenbriar × Duarte clan.
