“Nothing excited the living more than death”

I did really enjoy this book, however it is a little slow and can be slightly boring at times. Overall I was happy with the story, and enjoyed the last few chapters the most.

“You mistook the stars reflected in the surface of the lake at night for the heavens”

I loved everything about this book! The characters have great depth and each have unique personalities. The world is described in such detail, and allows you to delve into its politics of war and racism between humans and non-humans.

“The wishes we make in the dark have consequences”

A book rich with fairytale and folklore. Liesl is ‘unlovely’, alongside her beautiful sister and her talented brother, she is plain and ordinary. When her sister is forced into potential marriage to the Goblin King, Liesl must venture into the underground and save her sister. There, she discovers that her soul is full of music, and that this is what makes her beautiful.

“Loveliness of the spirit is worth more than loveliness of the flesh”

Sexy, dark and thrilling, this book traps you into the world of the goblins, and just how much love and music matter.

Eliza lives with her father, and works as a teacher for small girls. One night, her father suddenly dies, and Eliza abandons her teaching, and travels across the country to become a nanny for two children in a large manor. However, when she arrives, she finds there is no one there to greet her but the children.

The one thing that was amazing in this book was the atmospheric writing. It was gothic, dark and really added to the creepy plot.

The book also deals with huge gender issues that reflect the time period.
Eliza is a huge feminist figure, and is accused of being a “modern” when she suggests a woman could be a banker.
