Relaxing read with a simple and charmingly-simple art style, although there wasn’t much here that I haven’t seen done a little better in other works. The art is neat, but can get big sometimes, filling the whole page spread with overwhelming amounts of panels with similar contents. It was a little disorienting starting out. I also think I would’ve liked it more if I had known more about Travis. This books leans very heavily into show-don’t-tell, but sometimes there isn’t a lot to show.

McCloud easily knows comic theory inside and out, and that’s on full display here. On a technical scale, this is soooo immersive. It’s a big, beefy book, but it’s hardly ever dull. Writing-wise, it’s good. The characters are all incredibly flawed, which makes rooting for them a little difficult, but the book is nonetheless an exploration of the human condition, as all art is, and there are still things to learn from these flawed humans. That said, there were still quite a few head-turning decisions made by some characters. The characterization is the only thing that puts me off to this book. Everything else is sublime.

I feel like I wanted to see an elevation of everything in this book. Like the basis of it was solid, and it’s ultimately not bad, but it was very same-y along the way. The art was cute but got a little stale after a while, there wasn’t a lot of show-don’t-tell, and the conflict could have had higher stakes. Maybe I just don’t read a lot of romance, I don’t know. This book is cute, and I may be nit-picking.

I can’t figure out what I’m supposed to gain from this book. There were moments of catharsis, and I’m sure some characters are relatable to some degree, but the ending feels vapid and it’s generally just depressing. I’ve heard the Netflix show is substantially better, but I think this one’s only worth picking up if you’ve seen that first and want to explore the series’ origins.

I like these plays, but I can’t realistically see me enjoying productions of them.  They portray realities that we very much need to confront, but the naturalistic writing that results from the real-life interviews is often stilted and doesn’t lend itself to a theatrical setting. Still, it’s hard not to feel things as you read this. I’d still recommend it to anyone for the sake of spreading The Woke Agenda.

Jillian Tamaki’s brain and sense of humor is just marvelous. Boundless is a collection that I’m so glad I impulsively picked up at HPB. Some of these stories could legitimately be full books, which I wouldn’t mind seeing at all. Very fun collection for those who love short-form stories.
