found this rec on tiktok because who wouldnt love the oh, my ex-boyfriend from college actually became the pakhan of the russian mafia??? plotline. despite that, i felt like there was something missing... maybe it wasn't dark enough for a so-called dark romance. maybe it was the lackluster romantic connection between the leads.

i enjoyed it enough to finish it, but it wasn't remarkable.

“And I almost hope there was someone after me, someone who broke him differently. Because I'm not worth three years of someone's life.”

again, is there a hotline i can call where someone slaps my face repeatedly for being a dumb bitch? because i should have read this earlier. im disappointed with myself. this was everything.

at first i was hesitant when i heard about the switching past and present povs (because i HATE them) but they were written so well. i love it when books don't provide you with the whole picture. is elliot still pining for her? you actually don't know, despite elliot having his own pov chapters.

i assumed this would be a romcom, but i found myself trying to hold back tears whilst i read this at my internship office. it had its comedic moments! but some chapters were a punch to the gut.

!! also, quick spoiler warning!

when i connected the dots and figured out the reason behind the preciseness of the past chapters timelines... THAT ALMOST TOOK ME OUT!! “...it's been years, and i can still tell you the number of days since she last needed me.” FUCK. you can find me dead in a ditch

“Every warped part of me. It's yours, Little Thief. I hope you like playing in the shadows, we'll be staying here for a while.”

i tried curing the book slump with the hollow boys series, but im not sure if it actually worked. this followed the usual first book of a series pattern—an okay romance, side characters who are much more interesting than the main pairing, an interwoven mystery spanning the rest of the series—and just to put it out there... i'm predicting ill love alistair and briar more in their cameos.

also, im not sure if the book was edited well because the grammar mistakes and the formatting had me disoriented every chapter??
