Thank you NetGalley and Archipelago for an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review!

This book was a mishmash of many themes but mainly colonialism as it explores Rwanda's past in a 4 part story. The writing is intriguing from the get-go. I was immediately curious about the characters and learned a lot about 1930's Rwanda along the way.
We follow a few characters but they all surround a mysterious healer, Sister Deborah.

I do wish the characters were more obviously separated so I didn't get lost so much, But I did feel like a detective that solved the case when I connected the dots and realised which character we were reading about.
I'd recommend reading the synopsis because I can't describe the book any better than that.
I'm excited to pick up other books by Mukasonga!

Perfect example of unlikeable main character but still a great read!
Fantastic character exploration and storytelling. I also really enjoyed the callbacks. We would be told about something that happened and would get a full explanation later on when it makes more sense and impact in the story.
One of my favourite quotes:
Through the dull perches of time and too long since that surge of awakening, on the nights we are certain of the unbearable wrongness of coexistence, the birds get in. Tiny, inconsequential shifts put me in a new position from which I could see unexpected vistas or be approached by unlikely people. One shift leads to another as you make room for yourself again and again. I readjusted several times over the course of years to allow myself to arrive

I can’t wait to pick up Beautyland by the same author!
