This book was a humorous take on the usual high-fantasy quest-style story with a few steamy scenes. I loved Cinnamon's snark and Fallon's blend of good humor and well-intended violence. I can't wait to pick up the sequel!

I really enjoyed the message of this book. It's okay to put yourself first and have clear boundaries with the people you care about. Levi and Gemma have clear character arcs, and their realization and understanding of this message unfolds beautifully through the book. They're kind of a grumpy sunshine situation, although I don't think Levi was really grumpy some times, I think he just had a bit of resting bitch face, haha.
In addition to healthy boundaries and managing relationships, the book also delves into adoption trauma. It's not an area that I have any experience with myself, but I think it's a really important topic and not one I've really seen addressed this way in fiction before.
There were a few stylistic choice in the writing that made me have to occasionally re-read a sentence or two, but it didn't really detract from my enjoyment of the book. The style was very conversational, the way people really talk. However, if liberal use of partial sentences in writing bothers you, the writing style might be frustrating.

I thought the story was cute and enjoyed the development of the romance. It did feel like the characters were a little too immature early in the story, bordering on annoying. There was also a little too much blocky description of clothing. Other than that, I thought it was well paced and the banter was cute.

Really only the first two essays were about time periods that interested me. After that it was just a slog of topics I don’t care about.
