It was in fact not better than the first.
I had started this book in hopes that I would enjoy it more than the first one and unfortunately that wasn’t the case. Recommendations said that it was the superior book out of the two and I really wanted to believe that but I disliked reading this too much to say it was better. I would say that it’s equally as bad. Whether the writing was mid-grade or not is not something I can speak on, seeing as i disliked the story too much to pay attention.

I literally started another book in the middle of reading this and only pushed through because they said that the second book is better.
Going into this book, I had really high expectations but was unfortunately disappointed. Contemporary Romance is one of my favourite genres and I always look forward to a cute couple I can root for. However, I found that I disliked the male lead too much in this book to root for the couple and neither was I super happy for them at the end. The writing never made me fall in love with the characters and I also found myself just wanting the book to quickly end so that I could move on.

My Thoughts
This was my first fantasy rom-com and it's safe to say that I did not hate it. The comedic aspects did bring the characters to life, however, it did sometimes feel too much. I felt like the synopsis gave the story away. It didn't leave much of a mystery and gave the impression that we would be getting more to the story than what was introduced.
It was an enjoyable read with a really interesting fantasy world, that had me curious and excited. The book has two parts, the first written from the POV of the FL and the second from the POV of the ML. I appreciated both points of view because it is fun to see the true thoughts of a character contrasting with what others interpret them to be.

If you're looking for an easy read that is not too complicated, then this is the book for you.
The premise of the story is a very interesting one that grabbed my attention when I read the synopsis. I went into this expecting a lot and came out, to be honest pretty unsatisfied. Personally, I felt like the story was flat and empty and the emotions were not felt. It was predictable, with very little world-building and I wished things were more show not tell. A dark, harsh, twisted tale was promised but instead, we were given a story that never went below surface level.
It was not a boring story however, it had an intriguing plot and I would definitely recommend reading it.
