I surprisingly enjoyed this book. Stoner leads an objectively bleak and depressing life, yet he finds ways to appreciate his insignificant existence. It is a reminder of what truly matters in life. This is reflected in the melancholic tone of the book that makes even the most depressing scenes engaging. It also depicts how trauma gets perpetuated within families and, in my opinion, this was portrayed excellently with subtle hints in behaviours and dialogues.

I enjoyed the overarching philosophical and ecological concepts presented by Herbert and the world building was awe-inspiring. That being said, I found that it got less and less engaging at around 50-60% of the book and I had to get used to being confused half of the time which, in hindsight, makes it less likeable. I would like to continue the series someday as I have greater hopes for the second book considering its length in comparison to this one. Overall, I'm glad to have pulled through until the end.
