Book Club Book – August

I will start this by saying I do not typically read horror. I found the characters and their motivations incredibly compelling, though it's clear that I'm not a horror fan because I would have loved this book even more if it were an edgy romance without the murders lol. Maeve having a two year countdown until she was alone and then her life spiraling when that timeline gets rapidly increased is super interesting! I really felt for her. And meeting a kindred soul... *chefs kiss*

In terms of the horror bits... I understand the ending, in that her fear and rage took over and she killed Gideon when he was just like her, revealing that they could have had a happy ending. I realize that this kind of ending fits the style of the book, but I still found it rather unsatisfying. I would have much rathered they sort of Bonnie and Clyde'd it in the end. After she realized that Gideon too was a murderer, I expected she would kill herself. If not, surely she will be caught after this? I would have loved just another page or two.

Honestly my main complaint is that Maeve repeatedly states that traditionally women always need a motive to kill while men don't, and she hates this narrative and wishes women could just be violent without cause. However, each of the murders she commits has a clear motive. She murdered Hilda because she wanted to put her grandmother to rest. She murdered her boss because she got fired. Etc. I feel like this took away from the point she wanted to prove.
