This book was short, but still a slow-burn. I love a book that is held together with this atmospheric, nature focused hum and this is definitely one of those.
hopeful informative medium-paced

While, overall, I loved this collection and the authors included, I felt that a number of the essays really begged  for a longer format. I really wanted to dig deeper in the practical, nitty gritty of process and methods and the histories of the campaigns and actions detailed in the book. We're at a moment where sharing strategies and honest experiences of being in this fight is so important and I wish we had seen more of that rather than the elevator pitches.

That being said, this collection is great for someone trying to sink their teeth in this way of thinking about the very stark realities of the climate emergency that doesn't terminate in gloom and doom. It also deserves a mention for its focus on indigenous voices, particularly those in the Global South and especially in the Pacific Islands who are facing the realities of climate change right now.
hopeful inspiring reflective medium-paced

A favorite memoir. Lamya so clearly articulates how we make community together. I aspire to have the kind of chosen family and deep love for others that the author has so clearly cultivated throughout her life.

This book wasn't plot driven or character driven, but rather the environment it exists in and the general vibe of the prose. Slow and very reflective on the small things that make up a life and a relationship. This is a book for people who are into those A24 movies where very little happens and very few lines are said but you still want to cry at the end.

You might feel worried for the dogs towards the end,
but no dogs die in this book

Ward's writing is always stunning and this isn't any different. We follow Annis as she descends through the levels of hell made manifest through slavery and the systems built in the US to profit off of it. I love elements of the supernatural and the natural world turned character, and this delivers on both of those.  The story rapidly picks up its pace through the last two chapters, which I read holding my breath. Beautiful and brilliant.
