Aitken's analyses of Basho's writing are intelligent, yet not complex. Anyone with a passing knowledge of Zen Buddhism & haiku can read this. Having both the meanings of the Japanese word structure and his interpretations is a fantastic formula in this sort of book.

As it delves into his writings, it explains Basho's life, as well as the time period he lived in. It also may help the Japanese learner understand the language deeper, as it did for me.
