"Because he didn't want Xiao YuAn to suffer, he doesn't want him to not be able to smile anymore. But he also doesn't want Xiao YuAn to hate him, to loathe him, or to think that he's evil. He has endured the destruction of his Country and the murder of his family, the abuse and the humiliation done to him by the enemy, and the hardships of war. He has been through so many difficulties, and yet, he still won't be able to endure a hateful look from Xiao YuAn."

"I want to be covered in blood. I’ll cry out in the end and weep for fear of leaving this world without ever once discovering the me inside me, the ugly something inside me."

a definitely worth short reading. bae suah's cruel and straight-to-the-point writing makes 'nowhere to be found' an unforgettable story.
during this time of idyllic tales and fetishization of south korea, the story becomes essencial in a sense that shows a reality that is often forgotten.

But if they — my father and mother —had loved me a little more, I would have been able to feel more — to feel real sadness, for example."
"Do you think you weren't loved enough?"
She tilted her head and looked at me. Then she gave a sharp, little nod.
"Somewhere between "not enough' and "not at all'. I was always hungry for love. Just once, I wanted to know what it was like to get my fill of it — to be fed so much love I couldn't take any more. Just once. But they never gave that to me. Never, not once. If I tried to cuddle up and beg for something, they'd just shove me away and yell at me. "No! That costs too much!' It's all I ever heard. So I made up my mind I was going to find someone who would love me uncon-ditionally 365 days a year. I was still in primary school at the time, but I made up my mind once and for all."
