And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini

2.0

This book gets off to a promising start, Hosseini sets the scene with an old fable about giant that comes and steals away children and one father's attempt to bring his child back. He locates his child, defeats the giant into offering to release his child but turns away himself when he sees the bliss in which his son is living. Poignantly portrayed, Hosseini beautifully sets the reader up with the hopes of another dazzling experience on par with A Thousand Splendid Suns. Alas, it's not to be. Perhaps the expectations were just too high. The story by the middle seems to have grown tentacles and is going off on so many tangents, too many characters with too much information. By the end of it I simply skim read the last few pages to quickly end it all! Three stars for the book and then an extra one knocked off for the sheer disappointment.
