I loved how the author was often deceiving the reader so that you think the plan is something else than it actually is. That way you can never really be sure whether things are going to plan or not. (That's something that the first book had as well but even more so in the second.) The character development was really good as well. I especially liked the way Matthias was actively trying to fight against his old believes because i feel like a lot of the time in books a character decides to become "good" and then it's as simple as that but here it feels more realistic because Matthias has learned these believes from a very young age on and it's nice to see how he's slowly learning to fight against that and seeing the world with new eyes. (I still found him annoying but I can appreciate that at least lol)
The characters were very diverse and out of all the main characters there was really only one that I didn't like (Matthias, he was kinda annoying) but I still found it interesting to see his point of view. I loved the way the backstories were explored for each character although sometimes it is "interrupting" the plot (or the present) in order to tell a backstory in form of a flashback or memory (I personally liked this but I can understand if it might bother someone else). I also liked how unpredictable the plot/outcome was because a lot of the time you don't even know what the characters intend to do (so you don't even know what the "ideal" plan is and therefore you can't really predict what might go wrong).
I loved this book so much. The characters were very diverse in so many ways (race, sexuality, religion and class being the main ones). And the book managed to bring up societal issues in a really good way. I also liked the plot twists and how genuinely unpredictable the whole book was. AND THE ENDING OMG it was perfect. The way it was very much a happy ending but not at all the way you'd expect. I was so happy that Cara ended up with Dell but still worked in Ash.
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

Not having known anything about Maya mythology I think it was really cool to learn a bit about it through this book. I also found the plot really original and interesting and the ending was SO GOOD (and really not what I expected which I love because predictable endings are usually kind of boring).
