in a phrase, this was PTSD & female rage meet grimm’s fairytales, which is to say it was disgustingly entertaining. it’s hard for me to articulate the precise feeling, but reading this made me feel like I was sloshing around in warm mud. this was likely due to the overt physicality of the characters and the moral ambiguity of their narratives; no one was clean. while the protagonists felt distinct, they often felt like caricatures rather than people. I guess this sort of makes sense because fairytales are meant to feel conflated. also, the dialogue at times felt like fragments of a single person conversing with themselves. I would’ve appreciated more nuance in this regard. however, I do commend this book for its intrigue and violence. best believe that multiple wtfs were spoken.
“You can’t change the past, but it’s infinitely reframeable. You can tell the same story over and over a hundred different ways, and every version is a little right and every version is a little wrong.”
