This book was so beautifully written. It feels grand and romantic but tragic and sad. I love how Kuang managed to weave the reality of racism and colonialism into a fictional story. The characters were wonderfully constructed, and their decisions and feelings made sense for each of them.

This book was a heartbreaking yet inspiring read. Stevenson has achieved amazing things. It made me sad in the end though because I thought of Trump getting elected in 2016 and the rampant and open racism since then. I wonder how EJI and their teaching on racism has been affected by that.
