This book made me feel physically sick. Just writing this makes me feel anxious and makes me shake. When I finished it all I wanted to do was to cry, but I couldn’t I just sat there, shaking and feeling nauseous. If you compare the movie to the book, the movie was literally a children’s movie in comparison to the book. The book was so well written and was really immersive. I loved seeing Frank’s thoughts and emotions behind the scenes I had seen in the movie, though I would have loved to have seen April’s point of view as well. Frank was an even bigger asshole than he was in the movie and I felt for April even more. Watching their relationship fall apart with each page was so unnerving (the plan to move to Paris being way less prominent than it was in the movie) and the ending broke my heart into a million pieces. I knew what was coming, but I spent so much time with the characters, especially April and to read what happened to her honestly hurt so bad. It was also so much more descriptive and the aftermath was described so much more vividly, exasperating the pain I felt. By the end all I wanted to do was to scream and cry and punch a wall. I have so many emotions inside of me right now I can’t even put it into words.

My fiancée showed the movie to me and I really liked it, so I decided to read the book. I loved the way Patrick Süskind describes smell. Every single scent he described was so vivid in my mind. I also loved the way he wrapped up the storylines and guided the reader through the different stages of Grenouilles life. It felt a little dragged on at times and it took me a really long time to read, but it was easy to read and the text flowed and I was interested the entire way through. The book was funny at times and thought provoking. The ending was crazy.

It was a really quick and easy read, but not really memorable to me. I loved the atmosphere and the vibe of the parties, but the book focused to heavily on things that weren’t of interest to me and focused too little on things that were interesting. I would have probably liked it more if it was more fleshed out. The characters were also pretty unlikeable and the ending affected me way less than I thought it would. I’m excited to watch the movie (the one with Leonardo DiCaprio) because it seems really good and right up my ally aesthetically.

I watched the movie a few months ago and really liked it, but felt dissatisfied by the message. I felt as though the director didn’t really know himself what he wanted to convey, and what they wanted the message to be. It left me confused and frustrated. But the book answered all of those questions and I loved the way Bernard Schlink showed the thoughts and personalities of the two main characters. Hanna was actually a person, with a story and a real personality (positive and negative) and not just this evil person that needs to be condemned like in the movie. The message was also so much clearer in the book and it really made me think about the way we (as a country) handled and handle this topic. The writing was great, straight to the point but still immersive and the ending deeply upset me.

This book made me start reading again after not reading for over 10 years. This book means everything to me and so does my baby Marianne. She is me and I am her. I accept no criticism on this book.
