i think its important for those who are upset about the ending to realize that it was Very Much a metaphor about the topics explored in the book

i think if you read this book as sort of an equivalent to how humbert humbert (replacing with florentino) narrated lolita there is a lot to gain from this... all i can say is fuck men though

this was such a well researched, historical novel with so much love and detail put into it. i almost cried at multiple parts :( its a lesbian story about finding love, losing love, and choosing to forgive

not as addictive as the silent patient but I found this plot more plausible than SP. wish there was more dark academia and more of The Maidens :(

i feel like i maybe didnt read this book at the right time in my life- i might have to be a bit older. i think there is probably a lot of rereadability here. there are so many people i think this book can click with more than i did at this point in my life right now.

that being said i really appreciated quite a realistic depiction of a mental illness and how it made the main character pretty unlikable for most of the book. the writing was a little too millennial coded for me to fully enjoy on its own. i also think things wrap up way too nicely in the end but there is still some realism there.

i did not click with this book at all... while i usually love books where nothing really happens, i felt like this book was so much of a slog. i think its due to not really connecting with one of the main perspectives, akash... at no point in the story did i actually want to root for him, and it felt like characters in the story were constantly doing his emotional growth for him. his chapters also had a very close link with RnB which I am not really familiar with.

renu, on the other hand, had a lot of interesting perspectives on the world around her. while i feel like her stakes were much more due to being in her own head than akash's, i cared a lot more about her storyline.

the pacing and character resolutions in this story were also very odd. i think the author tried to do way too much at once and i lost interest pretty easily... the style of writing was also not that appealing, which i feel like needs to be the star in this kind of book. it was also painfully predictable. that being said i did really enjoyed the 2nd person pov.
