i absolutely ADORED the premise and the concept of this book, but i found the execution to be pretty poor. i think theres a fine line between satirical genius and sounding stupid and when dorothy called people 'sims' it ruined the immersion for me. the best parts were her relationship with emma
and i think this book would have been so much better if they kissed or something
. its a fine book if just vibes can carry you.

if you are looking for a book of answers or an in depth plot of a speculative world, realign your expectations. while this book is labelled as science fiction, i really would not call it so. the speculative background is to help establish a setting that explores some intrinsic questions about humanity and what makes us human, the horrors and the good that humanity can do to one another.
i will say this book was a hard read for me at times, and i cried at some of the integral moments of the main character's story. the humanism that she explores reminds me much of the yellow wallpaper, if you enjoyed that short story.

this is a book where you need to be dealing with grief to get the full expierence of; if you are in the same stage of magical thinking as didion, i think this book will speak volumes. otherwise, i can understand why some people think its repetitive and miss out on some of the nuances that didion lays out through her processing

the book is much more about the complicated relationship of three characters as the victims of circumstance in their dystopian world rather than the world itself; that being said i do think it had some really interesting things to say about what makes someone human
