this book really wasn't for me, I think if youre more of a romantasy person you would enjoy it. the writing was mediocre verging on bad, there was a lack of character development and a lot of the characters simply acted out of character when it helped with the plot and plot twists, and I only really liked one of the romances. also not enough sister stuff for me :( that being said I did really like the world building and the magic system and that was by far my favorite part. things do get interesting at the end so maybe I'll continue, though i think an audiobook is a better way to consume this story

I loved this??? I honestly wouldn't call it a literary book, but it was still such a fun and emotional read. I read Hello Beautiful recently, and I think this book accomplishes everything I think was missed in that book. Everyone has so many layers and i feel like the sister dynamics are actually very realistic. this is also a very cinematic book- I would love to see a movie adaptation one day. I think this is a perfect book to help recover from a reading slump as well.  That being said, don't read if you can't handle incredibly flawed characters.

fun fast but dark read. I will say I liked the academy setting of the first half of the first book more than than the war-y parts, that being said i think the poppy war books is by far kuangs best work.

that being said... I have a problem with the portrayal of a certain character.
why is venka only used  to talk about rape and abortions? like genuinely it makes me really sad that her character is boiled down to she was raped and now thats all shes to refrence to. seriously like.. why ???

this book isn't for everyone, I feel like I'd want to reread this in the future. that being said I do think it is one of the more interesting books on motherhood. I also feel like a lot was lost in translation, particularly in the poems. my favorite part was the mini essay on frakenstein

so i want to say it is really amazing that a 17 year old wrote this book. that being said, i think you could really tell within the writing and the structure. this isnt always bad- i think the younger characters were incredibly realistic to their age and what they do and how they speak. however, this means the adult characters and the structure of this story really falters. there are times where its very tell not show, and i feel like the author just hasnt experienced enough in life to really tighten the prose and structure of the story. i will say i loved the relationship between kiara and ale, that was really sweet.

there were parts i liked (allen and mara and peter almost made me cry) but I feel like the novel was too loose and too messy in terms of it's themeing. I think a narrower scope could've really solidified this

i need to go over my annotations of this book, but I really appreciated how it made me slow down and think about things. I don't really love the theme of "women long to give birth" but i think it handled it in a way i like. I will say I liked book 1 more than book 2, wish we got to see more of midoriko as a character
