I know with monster hunting and dark academia it's easy to become tropy or repetitive and I'm so glad that I can still find something intriguing and fresh in my favourite microgenre. I couldn't stop reading it and I was thrilled to see what happens next. The world building was brilliant, pacing was great, and I found the characters multidimensional and intriguing. I'll be looking out for anything the author writes.

I was intrigued by the premise and I enjoy the plot. However, I think we have enough of cop protagonists and I cannot get over the light-hearted "they tried to kill us (3 people) so we kill them (an entire colony of civilians sleeping)".
I hope to return to the book, but this held me up long enough that I will not be able to give a meaningful arc review. Sorry.

A guy works through his grief and guilt! This obviously could only be achieved by (checks notes) multiple pages of homophobic crime including among other violent gang rape and attempted murder. I just don't understand the point but I see other people liked it so good for you! To me, if you removed the 10k similes and unrelated violence you'd be left with about 10 pages of plot. Religious themes unfortunately not deep enough for me to feel anything about.
The star is for a solid beginning/exposition.

I thought maybe I just related to Hell Followed with Us and won't like The Spirit Bares it's Teeth because it's usually not my genre and I am an adult. Nope, AJ White is just really good. I loved the novel and I really appreciate YA breaching difficult topics and taking young readers seriously.
