Home Before Dark by Riley Sager

Twenty-five years ago, Maggie and her parents fled their home. All this time her parents have been telling the same story - they left because the house was haunted and they were in danger. When Maggie's father dies, she returns for the first time to uncover the truth of her past.
This was our first book club read of the year (being run in discord) and I did have fun with it.
The book's dual storytelling kept this read particularly engaging as we get excerpt's from Maggie's father's book between the telling of her current events. I did call a number of the motivations and plot points revealed as twists near the end but this did not hinder my enjoyment as I still remained double guessing some of these conclusions until they were revealed.
My one big gripe with this book was Maggie as a character. Had it not been for the book chapters woven between, I would not have been able to enjoy this as much. It seemed like every second thought Maggie had was just some iteration of "my parents are liars" and it did become tiresome having to live through the same thought patterns with her over and over.

The Roommate Pact by Allison Ashley

Roommates Claire and Graham have a pact that if they are still single by 40, their own dynamic could change in one way or another. When Graham gets into an accident and nurse Claire is the one left to look after him, the timeline changes.
I'll admit that the beginning of this book almost had me wanting to put it down. The tone of the very first page was off putting to me personally and the way the pact was discussed and came to be early on felt awkward. Despite this, I did end up thoroughly enjoying me time with the rest of this book. I'll admit I do often like a situation where one character has to look after another in a romantic setting, and there was some fun banter.
