This is such a fun story! I love the idea of the Merge. After the first few pages I thought the story was going to get dark and grim but it ended up being a lot more light-hearted than I expected.

One night Christopher finds a dead dog - his neighbor's. After initially being suspected for the crime, he is determined to find out the truth. As he starts searching for clues and asking questions, he gets more answers than he bargained for, and not just about a dog murderer.

Looking through fifteen-year old Christopher's eyes as a child with a form of autism and seeing how he relates to the world around him is a beautiful and sometimes heart-wrenching experience. The author explores his relationship with the people around him, the struggles he has of understanding the way they act and how his condition affects those who come into contact with him, especially his parents.

The book is both serious and light-hearted as Christopher jumps between his often jumbled and uncertain emotions to his ideas of space and math. I loved the fact that the entire story is told from Christopher's perspective. The book left me thinking deeply about the challenges that people on the autistic spectrum face and how ignorant I am of how differently people relate to life and relationships, as well as my own uncertainty and fears about interacting with someone who views the world very differently. It is a beautiful story.

I realize that this story may not necessarily be an accurate representation of an autistic person but it was the first time I found a book that focused on an autistic character and it encouraged me to learn more and challenged me to think about my own ignorance and perceptions around autism.
