North of Beautiful by Justina Chen

This book was great. I read it for the first time years ago in High School and remember just blowing through it. The characters were very much like my classmates and I thought that the cartography references added another level to the already wonderful prose. I've read some bad reviews about that long-running metaphor but it was so different and she did it so well... I just loved it! I think I may have liked it even more had Jacob not been a goth kind, but it makes sense - showing the contrast between her light and his "dark". Also, I was very impressed with the literary undertones thoughout the whole book. This is one of those I could really dig apart and come up with whole new meanings.
Overall, great book! Totally recommend.

Light spoilers ahead.
Well, the idea behind the book was interesting and this was not the worst book I've read. It was very difficult for me to get through this book, I had to keep convincing myself not to just shelve it for the rest of my life. My top 3 problems:
1.) The sentences are short. Most are no more than six words. For paragraphs on end. Throughout the whole book. It's super annoying.
2.) The characters are not developed. The majority of information and characterization you get from this book all revolves around the Queen's magic. About halfway through the book I realized I knew basically nothing about any of the main characters; aside from how amazing/wonderful they are at their magic.
3.) I had the plot figured out completely by the end of chapter 3. 100%. Nothing surprising happened in the book; the plot is so very basic it is almost painful to read.
I think my biggest problem was the writing style; it felt like I was reading a journal entry made by a high schooler. If you can get past that, you may enjoy it.

This book. Where to even start...
First, the voice is amazing. I immediately fell in love with the style of writing. It feels like John is talking directly to you.
Characters - they all seemed so real to me! Sig is fantastic. You really get to understand why she makes the decisions she does and love her even when they're stupid. The supporting characters all feel real, with their own little quirks.
The plot seemed to paced very well, I didn't have an issues with it and I'm generally really judgmental about these kinds of things.
I won't spoil anything, but the progression of the romance was done masterfully.
Overall, freaking loved it and can't wait to learn more about this fantabulous world and John Charming!

I read this book originally in high school and was hesitant to read it again, 6 years later. But oh my god it's still so good! The main character, Abbey, is hilarious. She has very similar thoughts that I would have "Oh my god did I just say that? That sound soooo inappropriate!" I know not everyone would like this book, but I felt the character was very realistic and while it is kind of cheeses at times, the cheese factor is balanced out by the overall depressing theme of the book. If you're not sure, give it a try!
