i came into this with low expectations but this is actually the best book in the series since #1. i might as well continue the series because they're funny, entertaining and take no time to get through.

i started this on july 4 aka reaping day/haymitch's birthday and then lost motivation immediately. i want to revisit it some day though.

this is a super entertaining summer read with well written if a little cliché family dynamics, a wholesome romance and a comforting setting. you've most likely read this if you happen to read this review but if you haven't, make sure the check to trigger warnings because grief and loss are big themes in this one.

romance aside, i would say the main thing i enjoyed about the summer of broken rules is the assassin game which most of the book's plot surrounds. it kept me constantly excited to pick up along with the romance, but when the assassin game concludes and the romance starts to lose its novelty, i started reading it much less frequently and was less motivated to pick it up.

by the time the book wrapped up, i didn't really feel satisfied with how everything was laid out at the end even though i also didn't really want more either.

overall, it was still a fantastic book that i would definitely recommend, but i would also say it only lived up to about 80% of its potential which is great but disappointing considering how a few tweaks and changes could've greatly improved the novel.

also screw her dad and uncle brad aka the middle aged brothers who never stopped acting like little boys. they could've been in squid game, they were so unserious and had a concerning lack of skill in reading the room and desperately needed to work on their basic empathy skills in general to be completely honest. i know they're literally side characters in a romance novel for teenagers but don't even get me started on those two.

if my neighbor totoro was a coming of age story. i enjoyed the mundane themes but the main character was a bit too unlikable for me to get behind. it's pretty good overall but i also feel like it was a bit pointless even though that's somewhat ironically the point.

what a beautiful way to end a wonderful series. i started this book last september after reading the first two books in the summer but paused reading after about 50 pages because i wanted to save it for the next summer and i'm so glad i did because reading this now on a beach vacation was so nice and atmospheric and i made sure to save the ending for when i went to the beach and read the last lines of the book while i heard the waves crashing in front of me.

the best way i can describe this series is that it feels like you're stepping into someone's memories. it has fast paced writing you can blow through and i already want to reread the whole series all over again. also i refuse to submit myself into any of the "teams" at this point. they all suck too much for me to settle on anything.

the best things about this book were the great fight scenes and quotes. the main problem i had with it was the lack of setting description and the queenstrail scene had almost zero atmospheric qualities to it which made me have to reread paragraphs several times and i really needed more to chew on for it to live up to its full potential.

the plot twist didn't surprise me that much and i'm confused as to why so many people are baffled by it since it felt pretty unsurprising when i read it. it was a great twist but why is everyone so shocked by it?

despite the problems i have with this book, it's still a great political dystopian fantasy that i want to keep reading in the future, but i would be lying if i said i wasn't little disappointed by this.

i'm too lazy to write an actual review because we'd be here all night if i listed all the great things about this book, so here are my main thoughts. ridiculously funny. great banter and characters. the romance is also very well developed even though it takes place over the course of a single day which is very impressive. definitely reading the sequel soon.

what a wholesome and delightful novel! i really appreciated the great messages of discrimination and prejudice towards marginalized communities and the romance! my favorite kid has to be talia because i loved her sass but sal is a close second. would definitely recommend this to magical realism enthusiasts for pride month.

this is a modern classic that gets better every time i read it. i did feel like the last 10% was a bit rushed and i would've liked to see more of that, but otherwise this is a flawless book.
