The Butcher and the Wren

No POV that I could get behind. The cop just loves dropping famous serial killer names and the killer was so cliché. The book is no show, all tell.

Getting Steiner's insights into one of the smallest Formula 1 teams in Surviving to Drive was really interesting, and getting to hear from him after his departure from Haas was just as good. I thoroughly enjoy Steiner’s narration and Unfiltered had just as many hilarious moments as Surviving to Drive.  I automatically go to the audiobook for Guenther's books, because just reading it wouldn't be anywhere near as entertaining.

Inside Mercedes F1 is told by a writer embedded in the team across the 2023 and 2024 seasons. It gives us some good insight to how Lewis and George operate as drivers, the mentality of the team principal, Toto, and we hear from some key team players within the Mercedes team.

I did objectively enjoy this deep dive into the Mercedes F1 team and how it highlights different members of the team. I particularly enjoyed reading about George and how he interacts with the wider team. There was obviously some mention of Abu Dhabi 2021, which I expected to be a bit of a pity party, but the mentions were brief and not dwelled on. It's good to hear how the team have dealt with AD21 and how they've tried to move on from it. Although, I do feel that the real emotion of that race was played right down for this book and the book doesn't shy away from talking about how their own fanbase lost faith in them. I absolutely loved the discussion around the environmental impact of F1, and there's a decent chunk of a chapter dedicated to this, which was brilliant!

Overall, despite not being a dedicated Mercedes fan, I appreciated this insight into one of the biggest Formula 1 teams and some of the discussion points were excellent.

Alex is growing on me more and more with each book. When Ryan appears in an Alex Gregory book, I fangirl. I read Panic during my breaks at work, so I wouldn't be surprised if somebody saw me fangirling when Ryan appeared in Panic 😂 L.J. Ross has left Panic on a tasty little cliff-hanger, and luckily, I'll be able to read the next book after Xmas 🤗

This feels like if Wax and Wayne (Mistborn Era 2) were really boring.

A pretty enjoyable read. The details of lighthouse keeping were interesting to me.
It explores how one copes with the loss of a loved one when you don't actually know what has happened to them, along with other regular dramas of married couples.

The ending of book 1 left me wondering whether I felt compelled to continue on to book 2, but I am so glad I did!

Seeing the women go through normal dramas alongside the witchy dramas was so enjoyable and there were some funny moments. It's a credit to Dawson's writing (and the audio narration) that when reading Niamh's POV, it felt like I was following Niamh until I was jolted back to reality and reminded that it was actually Ciara. While I was really hesitant about the body swap plot, it was a really good way to give Ciara the limelight without a bunch of exposition via Niamh and co.

I was irked by the fact that at about 3/4 of the way through, almost nobody had noticed that Niamh wasn't Niamh and even when this was exposed, the group just seemed ok with Ciara riding shotgun in Niamh's body. But, Dawson keeps winning me over with the shoutouts to shows/artists that I love and this time it was (the real) Linkin Park.

Overall, there were some twists that I did not see coming and I'm looking forward to book 3 and will give the prequel novella a go too.

"Where men have built ten houses together, there is the potential for violence"

I don't feel like I can produce coherent reviews of this series, so I'm just going to provide lists of what I've enjoyed (or not enjoyed) which have nothing to do with my rating, it's just plot threads that are irritating me 😂

Things I did enjoy:
  • Lanfear
  • watching Rand getting darker is fun
  • going back to The Two Rivers
  • Mat and his hat 😂
  • this is a very questy book.
  • I had to chuckle at one point because it felt like Perrin has become that employee who accidentally became important and just needs a break 😂

Things I didn't enjoy:
  • Faile is such a brat
  • I could not be convinced that her and Perrin were a romantic couple
  • Lan is lovesick for Nynaeve and it seems hard to believe
  • Nynaeve is unbearable and and can't stand someone else being good at something - a terrible character trait
  • this book really demonstrates Robert Jordan's inability to write women, referring to women as 'plump' and referring to their 'chins'
  • Aviendha's was unbearable! Why could she not shut up about Rand and Elayne?!

This book felt a little anticlimactic but after nearly 1000 pages, I was sort of expecting that but ultimately I did enjoy this book. Overall, the biggest flaw for me is the length of time between seeing the groups of characters makes it difficult to invest in a character (or a baddie). You can go dozens, if not hundreds of pages before revisiting a character, making it hard to follow some things.
