stormlightreader's Reviews (936)

I'm really happy we reached the murder we were all waiting for, I'm just sad we didn't get to experience it all through Lana's POV.

The more flashbacks the reader gets about 'that night', the darker it gets.

Leonard dropped the bomb to Logan about Lana. I saw that coming but the execution was good. I enjoyed Leonard. I don't think I even registered this character before book 4. Did the author deliberately play down this character or am I just stupid?

Books 2 and 3 were ok but book 4 was an improvement. I've said it before and I maintain my stance that you have to suspend disbelief to get any enjoyment from this series, especially when an FBI profiler still hasn't figured out, 4 books in, that he's dating a serial killer and to then has to have it spelt out for him 🤷🏻‍♀️

So atmospheric. The setting was so well written and sounded gorgeous. I would've hung out in this cold castle because, murder aside, it sounded amazing. Ryan and Anna are so sweet. I've definitely had a breakthrough with her. The standout moment for me was MacKenzie and Ryan and their shared trauma at the hands of the same killer. I loved how Ross gave us this intimate glimpse into their friendship. Now, I need so much more of Ryan and MacKenzie. This was such a beautiful moment.

First Read: The Reacher series can be a bit hit and miss for me and this one was a miss, unfortunately. I ADORE Reacher but certain types of story lose steam for me. This was great up until around 350 pages in but fell a bit flat and got a little repetitive into the last 100 pages. There were still a couple of twists in those final pages, which kept me going though 👌.

Re-read: my original review still stands. That last part of the bit was a struggle again but I did love the background information we get on Reacher. All of these little nuggets of information add to his character.

First read: Reacher is just a babe in some of his stories. (4*)

Re-read: the original review stands 🥰 (4*)

This was an entertaining short story. I've never read this one before. Another funny little glimpse into Reacher's past.

I really enjoyed this one. The prologue had me thinking this was going to be a slog, but I was very wrong.

The several crimes were all connected well, and for once, I was happy to have loose ends tied up.

The hunter plot was really good, and I wish there was a little more of that, but on the other hand, I'm really happy that the religious group plot wasn't drawn out. It was just right. Anna was so endearing in this book.

The characters have been the strongest aspect so far. I'm finding myself having to suspend disbelief a little more with each book.

Book 3 fell a bit flat and stayed that way for a lot of the book. But...I'm still tempted to read the last two books because it'd be daft not to see how it plays out, and they're on Kindle Unlimited 💃

I was apprehensive about this book due to the criminals at the centre of the story but Penshaw was a solid instalment.

There are a few plot threads to follow and L.J. Ross' character development is great. I get more and more attached to them with each book.

To get full enjoyment from this book you should read The Moor beforehand, as there is a significantplot point that spans the two books.

This was a book of two halves for me. On the one hand I really couldn't get on board with the main plot but on the other hand (as usual) there is some great character development.

The main story centres around a cold case. I'm really glad that Ross peppers in cold cases throughout the series but I'm yet to be gripped by one. That's a me thing, not a problem with the books. However, what made this one more difficult to get along with was that a 10-year-old was front and centre 😖 I also struggle to believe that a 10-year-old would confidently use some of the vocabulary she did (e.g. Sam describes the caravan she lived in as "open plan with a little kitchen area, with a built-in table on one side and a sofa on the other,”. Furthermore, this is a recollection of a memory from when she was about 2 years old where she saw something happen through the "wooden slats" of her cot). I appreciate that it is possible to remember that but it didn't feel plausible. I could be wrong. I don't have kids or associate with kids this age.

That was my biggest problem. The good stuff. Lowerson and Yates. Frank and Denise make a big step in their relationship. Anna wasn't really present in this one which felt bizarre. The ending was good but jeez, Lowerson has been through the ringer already 😑

Incoherent review incoming!

This has knocked Angel off the top spot as my favourite DCI Ryan book.

I have been dying to read this story and didn't even realise until well into the book that it was THIS story 😂

Like Angel, The Infirmary also centred around a certain ominous figure from Ryan's past and it was amazing!

I listened to the full cast audiobook and it was incredible! I want all of my audiobooks to be full cast now. All the stars for The Infirmary!
