There is no doubt that Jemisin is a master of storytelling. She knows how blend the culture, current situations, and themes with exciting story
I liked Yeine, the protagonist of the book. She started out as this clueless ordinary girl who was plucked out of her village and into the scheming world of power and politicians. She quickly understood the game, that power alone is not enough - "Power is not a thing to argue for—it is a thing to argue against."- but one has to be as cunning as the snakes around you.
At the same time, she did not let go of her humanity.
"The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.
This book is littered with memorable, powerful quotes. I could literally just read the book for those
"There are no truly pure gods, only gods that have learned how to wear the masks of purity.
"You don't love someone because they're perfect, you love them in spite of the fact that they're not."
"Sometimes, it is the violence against women that comes not in the form of bruises and blood, but in whispers and dismissals."
"The priest's lesson: beware the Nightlord, for his pleasure is a mortal's doom. My grandmother's lesson: beware love, especially with the wrong man."
However, I was not wowed by this one as I was with The Fifth Season. It read to me as a Dark romance fantasy that was trying so hard to cram as many themes as it could in one book using quotes: "oppression, power, slavery, gender equality, elitism, the power of gods, supremacy....." and so many more.
some events made me very uncomfortable
Like crushing on a person only to find out he was in love with your mother
Sibling incest even if they were gods!. I could have accepted that but the "creating your children then sleeping with them" or "fucking the person who has your sister's soul" was.....something
Also, the book read as DONE to me. I do not know why there are two other books. it did not end on a cliffhanger. I found the ending satisfying. So I don't think I will continue the next books.

this was one of the best READS this year
absolutely amazing for the simple reason that the female lead gave no fuck about the four guys
, unlike other RH fantasy where the h immediately is attracted to the love interests and show numerous cases of BBS, Maven truly and passionately did not want anything to do with the four hot guys who were dying to get her attention. 🤣🤣 and I was there to cheer her all the way
I loved everything about this book
especially since there was like 2% spice
another bonus because the plot took importance and was not rushed or sacrificed for the smut
on to book 2
