Fantastic, creepy setting. Strange characters that all become quite loveable. The horror elements are unpleasant and deeply unsettling.

I loved the idea of this, and the prose was fabulous but I struggled to follow the narrative, didn’t get lost in the momentum of the emotions and drama. A shame.

2.5 stars. The prose is beautiful but this story was missing its emotional core and and the characters were hollow, their motivations were distinct yet somehow like looking through frosted glass.

3.5 stars. James Marsters really knocks it out of the park. This was fun, but like with the other Dresden Files I find it hard to know exactly what it happening as it’s happening (in terms of how current events play into or relate to the broader plot), but it’s fun to just go along for the ride… world building, characterisation and narrative voice is so enjoyable that the rest doesn’t really matter.

This really caught me by surprise. The author is a fantastic writer. I didn’t anticipate how heavily it would lean into the horror at the end and I loveeeedddd it.
