one of my favorite short stories, ever! it’s so sad women can still relate to this story a century later. a remarkable depiction of depressive psychosis, much more visceral than many stories written today.

definitely worth a reread, too!

dnf. i’ve read plenty of dark fiction, but this is not only a story, and i’d have appreciated it if it were so. hanya yanagihara’s ideals bleed into the book, dare i even call it her propaganda. after writing a book with a laundry list of trigger warnings, the least she could’ve done was advocate against suicide, but instead, she had the audacity to say life isn’t always the answer. the topics this book discusses are very personal to me, and i’m appalled someone influential would even insinuate that suicide is salvation.
