I think I first read this when I was in my mid-teens, and it was THE MOST PROFOUND THING ANYONE HAD EVER SAID ABOUT DEATH! I read it again, recently, as (slightly more of) an adult, and it was good, but not as mind-bendingly profound as I had remembered it. Still, it's a sweet and very fun book, and I liked it a lot.

A story very focused on political intrigue, the concept of home and humanity, and, most of all, nationalism and it's impacts. Not my favorite on a personal level, but well-done.

To be honest, probably better than the movie. However, did not love how Tolkien decided to wrap this one up, it was a bit sloppy and weird. Ignore everything that happens after Mount Doom and it's fine.
