Intense, monumental and foreboding. This novel is a challenging read, those that brave it are rewarded with harrowing reflections of the soul and Japanese society in the post WWII era. You will be unsettled and disturbed.

Was underwhelmed and honestly disappointed about how the book panned out. I liked the alternative history sections as the main character goes through each state. I felt like the chase element of the book was pretty half baked. Lots of pacing issues and a lack of character development. Also disappointed at how little the Underground Railroad actually gets mentioned in the story

Has a weak start and some of the dialogue is a little grating. However, the book gets better and better over time and gets you hooked by the end. Overall a great sequel and middle chapter to Baru’s adventures

I know this book gets a lot of praise but it just didn’t do it for me. I found most of the characters wooden and with paper thin personalities. Dialogue was extremely rough and not enjoyable to read through. Some plot points left me very confused. I did enjoy a lot of the science jargon being thrown around. The translator did a good job showing off the full technical expertise that the author wanted to show off. However this goes back to my other point, since there was an overwhelming amount of scientific knowledge on display it only added to the confusion and monotony of certain scenes in the book.

Informative but suffers from a lack of concise editing. There’s a lot of information and names that get thrown around but I think it muddles the main narrative and message the author was trying to get across. Sentence structure also isn’t the best and proved to be a distraction for me. Overall I think there’s some profound questions about the role the death penalty should play in society today and the unbelievable strength it takes to forgive someone.
