Ok hear me out. This was all smut but in such a sweet and heartfelt way. This made me happy reading it. I can see myself reading it over and over as a comfort book, and I’m not one for rereads usually, and that’s my main criteria for whether something gets a high start rating from me: would I like to read it again because the writing and characters are good enough that I would enjoy reading it again even already knowing the plot. And the answer for me with this book is definitely yes.
False Comeback by Lily Mayne

Enemies to lovers doesn’t usually do much for me, but holy moly was this so good. I don’t know how Lily Mayne does it but this series gets better and better. And I am obsessed with the Holt and Taylor cameos we keep getting. They make me laugh so much. All the interpersonal dynamics of the group are layered and it creates this feeling of belonging when you’re reading this series.
Crossbody was so boring and unlikable in all the other stories, but OMG we didn’t have to wait long for him to get good. The sexual dynamic between him and Vince had me sweating, it was so hot. I felt like this had a little more of a plot than the other books and I liked the aspect of them going to Otherworld. I liked everything about this

This was… ok. There wasn’t anything particularly interesting or unique about it. The MMC being a virgin but being great at sex the first time is always a big missed opportunity in my book. The “good girl” praise stuff felt too forced and in there just because that’s apparently what readers like. And she called him “hon” a couples times and I really didn’t like that. If it hadn’t been so short, it would have been a Dnf

Naw. I wanted to like this. The premise is fun, and I wanted a series to get wrapped up in. But the tone of this was very buttoned up, starchy, dry in some ways and then informal in others. And then the whole aspect of the history of slavery and her not really getting how much it still affected the society, even tho “only two of those who had actually suffered under slavery still lived today.” That sentiment is so tone deaf and just compounds the whole icky feeling I got from the way the colonized/colonizer dynamic is described. No thanks

I this book did what it set out to do: be short and hot. It was both and it ended up being really sweet too. It didn’t feel rushed, a little cliche at times but I thought it was overall really enjoyable. And the spice was 🥵

Spectacular give me 14 of them right now.
This was my favorite one of the series yet. The length of the book was perfect. It allowed for great pacing, just the right amount of angst, and I fell in love with the characters. Garrek and magnolia were so wonderful together. I know the warden’s book is next, but I can’t wait for Oaken to get his happily ever after. What a sweet sweetie.

All the stars for George. No stars for Elle. Go to therapy, girl.
Ok, look. I stuck it out through this odd book until they finally banged, and it was so lackluster - and he’s a virgin, which is usually my favorite thing - I just couldn’t handle reading it anymore. This book had a lot of potential. Virgin MMC, wilderness survival, one tent, one sleeping bag, but goodness this ended up being a mess. First off the most egregious fault is Elle. She is so flipping annoying and just makes not smart choices. Like, you have to hike all the way to find your dad? Why not rent a snowmobile, which they talk about later? And good lord, that Joseph dude basically broke into your hotel room and assaulted you, you don’t tell anyone, you’re still ok with sitting down and hanging out with him and his friends??? And you literally kill someone after you almost die in avalanche. You can’t sleep or eat afterwards. Your dad is a schizophrenic. You’ve obviously had anxiety issues since you were a child, yet none of this is taken seriously in the book. Like, she needs mental help!! Not just “solving” it by having a huge dude to sleep with. Like, the amount of times it was said that she was too freaked out or scared but then she felt big, mountain muscles George at her back and she felt better… it was making me insane. The way the author treated other women in the book. These random women popping up just to serve to show that George is super hot and desirable and to pit them against Elle. Yuck. The plot was all over the place. I didn’t understand the flow or the pacing at all. The first time they had sex, he just puts it in and she orgasms? Like, this is literally the first time he has sex with anyone. Ughhhh And the POV of the bad guy is so weird and gross, how casually he thinks about raping Elle, from the beginning. I had like 100 pages left in the book, and I literally don’t care about this book except to write this review and then never think about it again. I listened to the majority of this book as an audiobook on a long car trip. I think if I hadn’t been listening to it, I would have DNF’d waaaay before I actually did

An Inconvenient Vow by Alice Coldbreath

The character development in this book is outstanding. The characters’ personalities and motivations are so well done, it was such a pleasure to read. So many books, the characters fall in love with each other instantly and their personalities are so cookie cutter and one dimensional, I’m left wondering what they see in each other. Jefree and Sabina each had so much personality and the way they clashed together as they worked to figure each other out was so so so so good. The one critique I have was the few days time jump in the second half of the book was a little jarring to me and took me a while to get back into things. And I was also taken by surprise when Sabina tells jefree that she loves him. But maybe that was by design to leave the reader feeling surprised by it because maybe Sabina was also surprised by it. Additionally, I didn’t read the other books in the series, so the references to the other books’ characters didn’t do anything for me and the scene with the other knight giving Sabina the flower crown and then the whole thing with his wife and the queen I am still confused about and I feel like I didn’t understand what was going on

This was a cute friends to lovers, bi awakening story. The third act break up made me roll my eyes. But it was short and very low angst so I had fun reading it
