I am giving her 4 stars because she is a good writer, and this book is very well written. I would give her 2 or 3 stars based on the fact that I didn't particularly like this book, it is just not my cup of tea. But others may like it.
I would not recommend that you read this based on the fact that you are a Harry Potter fan and this is by the same writer; You may read this if you have read the description of the book, like this kind of book and think that Rowling is a good writer. Which she is.
I think that Rowling has a talent for writing about a whole bunch of lead characters all at once, but in The Casual Vacancy, I did not enjoy this particular style. The Casual Vacancy does capture a lot of pettiness and narrow mindedness of small towns, but also of people in general, but when I finally put the book down, I couldn't help but wonder what had been the purpose of reading it.
All in all it is good writing, but just not the type of book I would normally enjoy.
