A great, accessible, introduction to the life and works of Maya Angelou. I’d greatly recommend this for children who may want to learn about Maya or parents/teachers who wish to introduce young people to ideas about activism, the arts, and concepts like racism, abuse, and advocacy for minorities.

Roald Dahl was such an imaginative storyteller and an inspiration for the children he’s entertained. This book was an essential part of my childhood - reading it felt like a reunion with a childhood friend - I feel privileged to have grown up with the likes of stories like these.
I especially liked Matilda as a child. Reading about her love of books, her wisdom, and her constant isolation made me - and many other children, for that matter - feel very seen. It’s nice to have had a moment in adulthood to recognise the importance books can have on a child’s development and emotional maturity.
I would like to mention that there are a few uses of ableist slurs within the text. I recognise that the use of such words were normalised around the time of publication but it’s important to continue to listen to those affected by ableism - even to hold authors accountable where appropriate. If I were to ever read these stories to my children, I would explain why those words were used and how it is no longer appropriate to say them.

I did like a few of the tales in this book but I found it difficult to remain consistently interested. I felt inclined to pick this up as I was a fan of the plays I’ve read from Wilde but was a little uninterested. Perhaps it’s because I’ve read from many writer’s who were inspired by Wilde? Maybe I feel that a lot of this content is something I’ve read before?
I still value his work immensely and regard him a very important writer. Maybe I’ll revisit some of his short fiction some other time, with a fresh perspective. I’m still hopeful that I’ll love Dorian Gray.

A very difficult read but stories like Stace Don’s are vital in educating and reforming a system that greatly let her down. I’m incredibly moved by Stace’s ability to reform her tragic start in life into an inspiration for other survivors and a consistent love and adoration of the family she made.
