Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney
Did not finish book. Stopped at 24%.

I wouldn’t have minded the slow pace of the book if the characters hadn’t felt so pretentious. The characters are written really similarly to Rooney’s other novels, which I didn’t enjoy - although I loved the screen version of Normal People!
Rooney seems to mainly write about young, white, cis, often hetero, middle to upper middle class characters. This story is no exception to that trend. There’s little diversity in her characters or the stories she’s telling and this book (although I liked it more than Conversations With Friends) still left me feeling like I was reading a book about two financially solvent white women who have kind of boring and also pretentious conversations about intellectual topics and also how misunderstood they each are and difficult their lives are.
Rooney writes what she knows best. She writes characters that mirror herself, her intellect and affectations, and her experiences. If you deeply connect with her specific blend of those things then you’ll love this book.
