OH MY GOSH THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING!! Once again, F.T. Lukens blows my mind with their upcoming queer supernatural ya release called ‘Love at Second Sight.’ Its been a hot minute since I’ve had the experience of loosing track of time and wanting to stay up late because I’m so enraptured in a book. I seriously couldn’t put it down, and if you’ve read anything by Lukens, you know that feeling.
High school student Cam has decided to be his authentic self this year with his witchy best friend Al. The plan was to admire his werewolf crush Mateo from a distance, not draw any unnecessary attention to himself, strengthen his friendship with Al, and maybe find out what happened to his missing older brother. But, like all first days of school, Cam’s turns out to be the start of a spiralling disaster after having a psychic glimpse of the future in front of the entire student body. And what is this glimpse you might ask? An unknown girl being murdered. Now it’s a race against time to try and prevent this murder with Cam’s ragtag yahtzee group of supernatural friends while also trying to navigate what it means to be a awakened clairvoyant.
This book is lighter on the romance side compared to Lukens other books, but the friendship bonds were truly beautiful to see. Yes, some of the characters made stupid mistakes that have you yelling at the book, but it was all worth it to have the level of character development this story accomplishes. You felt Cam’s frustration and fear of the unknown through every single page. Plus, you never knew what was going to happen next with the collection of plot points that could lead our characters down different paths.
Thank you @simonschusterCA for mailing me a physical copy in return for an honest review. I think it’s safe to say that Lukens is the Grady Hendrix version of supernatural YA where each book is equally as strongly written as the first.
