I feel like I enjoyed the idea of the book than the actual book. I love the idea of a gay superhero but I feel like it's constantly thrown into the reader's face "HE'S GAY! DID YOU HEAR THAT?! DID YOU GET THAT HE'S GAY?!" I understand it's from his perspective and at that age sexuality is very confusing but as someone who has come out as part of the LGBTQ+ community, I feel it could have been dealt in a slightly better way. I do love the character Ruth who was just the best and literally almost cried so many times. Also, a lot of the hate towards Thom didn't feel natural. Idk, I grew up in a very tolerant area so maybe I'm not one to speak on it but a lot of the 'faggot' comments thrown and him and graffiti at his home felt unrealistic for the time period and the setting of a populated city (where perspectives are more liberal and accepting). Though I do understand the stray bigots who take things into their own hands. I just wish it were longer and more fleshed out. There was such a good build up but it felt like the ending and big battle and big reveal was very rushed at the end considering how long it built up to this. Anyways, it fell lower than expectations but I still liked it very much and was glad to have read it after my friend had recommended it to me.
