In “The Breakaway” by Jennifer Weiner, we’re immersed in the world of Women’s Fiction as the author fearlessly tackles modern themes. The story revolves around Abby Stern, a 33-year-old woman navigating her way through the pressures of society’s beauty standards. Abby’s struggle to accept herself is at the heart of the story, as she finds refuge in cycling for both physical and mental well-being. We learn that Abby perceived her mother’s desire to “fix” her, which adds depth to her journey.

The book introduces us to Abby’s life from various angles, focusing on her relationship with Mark, an old flame, and a brief encounter with Sebastian that sparks self-discovery. Abby’s decision to lead a bike group trip brings unexpected surprises, including meeting fifteen-year-old Morgan, who carries a hidden secret that adds to the tale’s depth.

Jennifer Weiner dives into important topics such as body image, the impact of social media, and life-changing choices, while emphasizing personal growth and self-confidence. “The Breakaway” invites readers to join Abby’s transformative journey, offering a chance for self-reflection and understanding.

While people’s connection to the story may differ, the book’s honest approach is its charm. Fans of Women’s Fiction will appreciate its courage and relatable themes, making “The Breakaway” a compelling read for those who enjoy thought-provoking stories. There are content warnings surrounding pro-choice so readers please be advised.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher, but the thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.

Jean Meltzer has quickly become one of my go-to authors, and her latest work, “Kissing Kosher,” showcases her remarkable talent. Through the lens of her own experiences as a Jewish woman with a chronic illness, Meltzer weaves a heartwarming romantic comedy that is both captivating and deeply empathetic.

At the heart of the story is Avital Cohen, a single woman who manages a thriving kosher bakery in the heart of Brooklyn. Avital’s life takes a significant turn when she is confronted with the challenges of Interstitial Cystitis (I.C.), a chronic condition that disrupts her daily routine. This condition becomes a pivotal point in her life, especially when she crosses paths with Ethan Lippmann, who enters the bakery with a hidden agenda – to uncover the bakery’s secret recipe for their renowned babka.

As Avital and Ethan’s paths intertwine, a delightful and unexpected romance blooms. Ethan’s genuine concern for Avital’s well-being leads him to offer his assistance in a crucial clean-up project, a gesture that deepens their connection. However, Avital’s awareness of her own limitations due to her illness casts a shadow on the blossoming relationship. Meanwhile, Ethan grapples with the fear of revealing his true motives and jeopardizing their growing bond.

Meltzer masterfully crafts these characters, endowing them with depth and relatability. Their personal histories are intricately woven into the narrative, lending authenticity and emotional resonance to their journey. Avital and Ethan’s chemistry is palpable, making it impossible not to cheer for their happiness. Readers who have experienced the impact of chronic illness on their lives will particularly find solace and connection in this story, as it sensitively explores the challenges and triumphs faced by individuals in similar circumstances.

In “Kissing Kosher,” Meltzer delivers a touching and entertaining narrative that transcends genres. With its blend of romance, humour, and genuine emotion, this book is a must-read for fans of Romance, Romantic Comedy, and Women’s Fiction alike. Prepare to be enchanted by Meltzer’s storytelling prowess and to find yourself rooting wholeheartedly for Avital and Ethan’s love story to unfold.

Chandler Cohen’s level of job satisfaction hits a low when the author whose book she has ghostwritten doesn’t even recognize her. She’s wanted to finish the book she’s been writing under her own name but there are bills to pay and she’s in demand to write the books of others.

Finn Walsh is an actor who is living off his previous success. He meets Chandler in a bar one night, gives her a made-up name, and the two are instantly connected. The passion is there and they can’t wait to be alone together. Chandler is surprised at how bad a lover Finn is. She sneaks out while Finn is asleep and writes it off as a one-time bad experience.

The next morning she attends a business meeting to discuss her next book assignment and meets her new client – Finn. They agree to work together and it comes out that Chandler didn’t find Finn that good of a lover. As the two begin a tour of conventions that Finn is participating in, Chandler begins writing his book and teaching him the finer art of lovemaking.

There was plenty of humour and practice as the two begin spending time together. As the characters reveal more about themselves, the discussion becomes deeper as they talk about their hopes and dreams for the future. I enjoyed the way they each brought out the best in one another. The chapters are named after the cities they’re visiting on the tour and this brought a fun element to the book. While this book won’t be for everyone, those that enjoy a steamier romantic comedy will be entertained.

I listened to the audiobook version of Business or Pleasure which was narrated by Hathaway Lee who provided an enjoyable performance. I loved her tone and her enthusiasm for this book and would not hesitate in recommending this format.
