Dragon school competition turns into actual war.

I was very drawn in by the characters and found Lee and Annie great narrators to switch between to learn about the current state of the country, as well as the past and how they got there.

Julia was such an important character and her relationship to Lee was so well written and complex. Trying to hold on to the last family you have, the only person alive that can help you prove to everyone and more importantly yourself, that your past was real was such a great part of this book.

The dragon fights were the perfect length for me, sometimes fight scenes go on for a little to long, but these kept me engaged and got to the point. I was happy that the characters, specifically Lee and Annie, had messy and well rounded relationships with the others in the book. Annie working with Power to train, despite the obvious hatred. Lee and Crissa having this complicated thing, where I could never quite tell how serious it was for each of them.

Annie and Lee's intense intimacy was gravitating. Their relationship was almost past a basic sexual relationship, their trauma bonded them, but as they grew they just seemed to be magnetic. They didn't have to even be with each other, but when they were everything just snapped back into place.

Politically, I am interested to see where the story goes. Even though the Dragon Lords were very bad, these guys aren't good either. It really is a " how far will you defend the lesser of 2 evils". The metals systems and how it is just a thinly veiled version of the dragon lords was a really interesting commentary and learning about how the new politcal leaders act post revolution was almost comical
