This was a perfect book in every way. I saw it differently now that I have a three year old. Death was always there but it was when they tried to go against it that they faced consequences. The best Stephen King book I've read so far.

It had me hooked for a majority of the read but in the last third or so, I was very annoyed with the author as she kept saying that she realized what she was doing was wrong for months but did nothing about it. The book seemed to be building towards advocacy for financial freedom in women; the author did give back by becoming a sobriety coach but for me, it didn't really hit as a lesson learned or redemption made.

This was a very enjoyable read. I liked Harriet and the overall pace and world building was good. My only setback was the descriptions of violence against her were very graphic and often had no follow up on how she could cope. It was like we blinked and something terrible happened and then we moved on. I do realize this is probably the most realistic version of what would happen to women in this time period. But it was still very jarring.

This was a very well thought out timeline given how often we switched between years and points of view. The settings were rich and complex, the two sisters were very fleshed out, and the overall story flowed easily. The only distraction came at the end when Maya had several main suspects presented to her and she was wrong each time. Given she was sleep deprived and in grave danger, the assumptions were easy to dismiss. But the plot twists after plot twists at the very end were almost comedic at that point.
