Helpful, clear explanations. Maybe abuses the use of examples, but to each their own.

Adichie’s style is so wonderful that you will enjoy even the horrible in this story. Moving and thought provoking, this is a story of a family, religion, politics and love. I think I would have to re-read it to fully understand the structure chosen, but I wouldn’t mind doing so at all.

Such a good read. Very interesting to reflect on the ongoing relevance of the situations Woolf describes. It reads incredibly modern and it is moving to imagine Woolf herself talking to the reader. I was very pleasantly surprised by these essays. Would recommend to any aspiring writer.

I really enjoyed Joan’s character. She is a very interesting woman and unapologetic in her wrong doings, brutally honest, yet aware of their immorality. This book is a poignant exploration of girlhood, anger, and grief. The title of the book haunts the text, and invites the reader to reflect.

This is an absolute gem of a book. It is heart-wrenching, but I loved every piece of it. This was my first Adichie, and she deserves all the glowing recommendations she has. I will re-read in a couple of years. Cannot recommend enough for people who like historical literary fiction. It has love, familial relationships, class struggle, and it is exquisitely written.
