Do you like crime? Do you like creepy? Do you like weird creepy? You’ll love this book. My second favorite read of the year!!!
CW: self harm, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, manipulation

Things I loved:
-Hella gay, I'm here for it.
-Got me hooked. I read it in two sittings.
-Liked the setting/atmosphere/idea of the story.
-Changes of perspective between Hetty and Byatt
Things I felt iffy about:
-The ending. I don't mind that you're left to your own imagination, but also..something about it made me feel a little disappointed. I kept getting closer to the end and thought what? I only have 5% or 2% left in this book.
Overall I enjoyed this read. This is a quick, exciting, I'd say semi-horror YA book.

I finally (!!) read this book. I didn't care so much for the beginning of the book, but really enjoyed the story and pacing once Eustace, Jill, and Puddleglum got to the underground world. My imagination went nuts for the underground world.
As I've noted in reviews for the other books I did not like that Jill is seen as less than compared to the other male characters. Again, I do recognize the time period this was written. It was disappointing when the male characters told Jill they would fight off whatever they could with Jill (doing nothing/helpless) behind them (general gist of that moment). Jill also never wields a sword like the other male characters do. She gets a small knife. These are picky things, but it's still disappointing that Jill isn't seen as someone who can do the things the other, male, characters can.

This YA thriller was okay.
CW: kidnapping, mention of rape, murder, violence
This book had a lot of potential. I think part of what is holding it back is the lack of descriptive imagery through the book. By the end of the book I couldn't tell you what any of the main characters looked like except Clover/Colin. I think this is partly why I couldn't connect with any of the characters.
My other issue is that chapter one starts out in the present time, but the author doesn't tell us what the present year is. I was utterly confused in the first couple of flashbacks because I didn't know the time difference.
Overall I thought this book was entertaining, but nothing super special due to the writing.

I really enjoyed Atakora's debut novel even though it was a slower read for me. I felt like I needed to take time to digest certain scenes, chapters, and/or chunks of the book.
This book revolves around three women: Miss May Belle, Rue, and Varina. The timeline also focuses on two time periods: during the Civil War and post Civil War. I felt that switching between time periods kept me asking questions and kept me wanting more.
Atakora makes clear the sexual abuse, degradation, and harm Black women experienced during slavery without writing explicit scenes. I really appreciated this.
The plot did take a different direction than I was expecting it to. I originally thought going into this book and when I first started reading that there would be more emphasis of supernatural forces. I did enjoy the plot and story even thought it was not what I expected.

CW: brief use of homophobic slurs, some body dysmorphia, homophobia
This book has my heart. I did not expect myself to like the soccer scenes as much as I did, but I loved it!
Also, friends to enemies-ish with tension to lovers??? Summer love?? I loved the build up of the relationship and at page 146 I was screaming with joy.
I also loved the rep for this book. One of my favorite parts in the book is late in the story when Coach has a chat with Bastian when Bastian feels like everything is falling apart.
I feel like I could absolutely read this again and still have all the strong emotions I felt when reading it the first time. I loved this book and will definitely be reading it again sometime.
