4 ⭐️ Cute, short audiobook

WHAT TO EXPECT:
✨ academic romance
✨ classmates to lovers
✨ project about love at first sight
✨ forced proximity
✨ no spice
✨ HEA

My Thoughts:

I just wanted something lighthearted and fun to listen to during a drive. This was it.

I like the premise. The narrators did an excellent job. I just didn't love this story because I found the guy to be too awkwardly chatty for my taste. Some of the stuff he said (while not bad) would have embarrassed me if I were standing next to him in public. Like, I would have thought he had a screw loose if I didn't know him and realized he was just being goofy. So I didn't really find his personality attractive. But again, the story was sweet and I enjoyed it.

4 ⭐️ An intriguing gothic fantasy romance

There once was a girl clever and good, who tarried in shadow in the depths of the wood. There also was a king - a shepherd by his crook, who reigned over magic and wrote the old book. The two were together, so the two were the same:

The girl, the King...and the monster they became.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
✨ ya/new adult paranormal fantasy romance
✨ gothic medieval-esque world
✨ Elspeth is one of the 'infected' and shares her mind with the 'Nightmare'
✨ Ravyn is the captain of the king's army and hunts the 'infected'
✨ reluctant allies to lovers
✨ fake engagement
✨ forced proximity
✨ insta-lust
✨ slow burn
✨ 1/5 spice (one open door scene that's quick and mostly fade to black)
✨ secrets and lies
✨ magic has a price
✨ high stakes

My Thoughts:

An intriguing gothic paranormal fantasy with a dash of romance.

Positives:

I enjoyed the gothic vibes. The world and magic system was fresh and interesting. The court politics were fascinating to watch unfold. I like the side characters and am excited to see what happens to each of them in the Next books.

Negatives:

I thought the plot twits/reveals were never surprises thanks to the obvious foreshadowing. So many things could have been avoided or solved if the Nightmare had just been forthcoming with Elspeth, which made his withholding information feel like a weak plot device. Elspeth overreacted towards Ravyn a lot, which came across as annoying and immature. The romance, while I liked it, was very insta-lust and I didn't quite believe the development and depth of their connection.

Again, I did think it was a solid read but everyone was raving about it so I guess I’m a little disappointed that I’m not obsessed. Don’t get me wrong, I really like the gothic vibes and dark medieval-esque world. And the characters are interesting. I just thought this book would have a bigger impact on me. Maybe book 2 is better and solidifies this as a top tier series? Please tell me if book 2 makes this series better or worse

3 ⭐️ Cute addition to the series

"You are my everything, Meera. You're my light. You're my peace. You're my home. I'm going to be all those things for you too, when you're ready to let me, and not a single moment earlier."

WHAT TO EXPECT:
✨ book 6 (standalone)
✨ monster romance
✨ shades x hunters
✨ both MCs are quiet and misunderstood
✨ friends to lovers
✨ slow burn
✨ 2.5/5 spice
✨ gentle femdom
✨ mates
✨ HEA
✨ TW: grooming (past), attempted sexual assault (past),

My Thoughts:

Okay, Meera and Verner are super cute. Their friendship was soft and sweet and then their romance became super hot and heavy. I think the friends to lovers romance was perfect. Verner is so patient and gentle with shy Meera. So much so that she finally feels comfortable to open up to him, but also feels safe enough to fully embrace herself and grow into a strong, capable, unafraid person.

While I enjoyed the romance and the overall story, I will say that this one didn't really stick with me/wasn't super memorable. But no matter what, don't skip it! I do recommend it if you’re reading the series.

5 ⭐️ An absolute f*cking DELIGHT!

I don’t know how to wrap my mind around the fact I’m giving a monster romance 5-f*cking-stars.

3 ⭐️ A true enemies-to-lovers romance

3 ⭐️ A fun addition to the series

WHAT TO EXPECT:
✨ monster romance
✨ he’s a failed musician and human
✨ she’s a lieutenant in the Shade royal guard
✨ black cat x golden retriever
✨ forced proximity
✨ denial of feelings
✨ slow burn
✨ possessive FMC
✨ obsessed MMC
✨ 3/5

4 ⭐️ Calix and Levana are adorable

3.5 ⭐️ The romance is so freaking cute!

WHAT TO EXPECT:
✨ book 5 (standalone)
✨ monster romance
✨ shades x hunters
✨ both MCs are adorable, lonely introverts
✨ MMC is ostracized bc of his appearance
✨ one night stand to friends to benefits
✨ miscommunication
✨ 3/5 spice
✨ mates
✨ size difference
Spoileraccidental pregnancy

✨ political intrigue
✨ high(er) stakes
✨ HEA

My Thoughts:

Tallulah and Evrin are the most adorable pair in all the realm! They give off such golden retriever vibes but both are lonely and just want to be loved for who they are.

4 ⭐️ It’s a bittersweet feeling ending this series

3 ⭐️ A cute novella if you want to read something short and sweet for Christmas.

"How long do you want me to stay?"
"Forever."
"Forever is a long time."
"And it still wouldn't be long enough with you, beautiful."

WHAT TO EXPECT:
✨ christmas novella
✨ small town romance
✨ high school sweethearts to strangers to lovers
✨ marriage pact
✨ insta-love
✨ HEA

My Thoughts:

I got this book for free during "Stuff Your Kindle Day", and since it was Christmas, I decided to give it a go.

Did I like it?
It was fine. Nothing special.

Would I recommend it?
Maybe if you want something short and cheesy to read during the holidays. The romance was insta-love and moved at an incredibly fast pace so don’t expect a deep story.

Here are some things about the story that made me cringe:

The FMC is a super successful graphic designer who owns one of the largest firms in the world, yet at 40 years old, she's single and wants a baby. But not just any baby. No. She wants a baby with her high school sweetheart who she made a marriage pact with. The premise itself is pretty cringy.
