This is a very difficult book to review. It was fairly well-written and an interesting and gripping story. It was also extremely depressing, infuriating, and slightly too drawn out and repetitive. I think I hated the character of Fareeda more than I’ve ever hated a book character in my entire life. I wanted her to choke on her gold tooth or get run over by a car. I chose a 4-star rating because this book is better than 3 stars but doesn’t deserve 5 stars. I feel relieved to be done with this book.

This was an eagerly anticipated book for me, but ended up being very disappointing. I had to force myself to finish it. Interesting and unique concept that was poorly written/executed and for the most part, completely ridiculous.

“I thought about how he left spaces for me when he talked. If I saw him again, I decided I might put words in those spaces."
Engrossing story, interesting set of characters, and a perfect writing style. The author wrote this so beautifully it made me “forget” how difficult the subject matter was. I do think she got the ending all wrong, though.
