The ending actually pulled out pretty strong. But wow this book is ridiculous. I think a lot of my confusion came with the marketing of it. SO if you like National Treasure, Laura Croft, The Lost City, etc - this book is totally for you! Definitely needing to suspend reality for a bit, it’s fun and adventurous, and the relationship makes sense.
Honestly though, I think without the romance this book could’ve flourished even more. The relationship between Leo and Lily felt like a staple of the authors (as in, they traditionally write romance) instead of what was best for the book. Also wow! Did that random death/murder take me by surprise. RIP Terry
This was a fun first book and I’m excited for the series to continue. As always I love the way Levenseller writes relationships in her books as they’re fun and dynamic. The book did get pretty formulaic and repetitive at time, but I’m thinking from set up that book 2 will hopefully be a bit different. Not too much world building going on, so also hoping to get more as the series goes on. Very excited about the found family aspect and to see the characters get developed more thoroughly.
I feel like I saw this book marketed as a YA romance, and definitely don’t feel like that should be the case. Like yes, that’s on the forefront, but there are plot points of violence and trauma, and drug abuse of minors. (So just be warned) With that being said, weirdly enough I VERY much enjoyed this book. I’ve been in a horrible reading slump for months and flew through this one in 2 nights. The characters are funny, and the concept is new and fun. I loved the movie influence and the summer setting. I also live really close to where this book (basically) takes place, so it was fun imagining basically where I live. For me, the darker plot points I mentioned felt a bit random and unnecessary. But overall the characters were well written and that’s always my main thing. Gonna look into picking up her other books!
Ok I really did not like the first book. But OH MY GOD! This one was such an enjoyable ride (ok and a really sad one) from start to finish! The writing had me hooked and so did the storyline set up. I’m loving the bit of personal growth that Belly is going through, and can’t wait to see how this gets wrapped up in the last book. Plus oh my goddd that cliff hanger from the epilogue!
Honestly I think this book just fell victim to my reading slump. Characters were decently developed and distinct from one another. The storyline as unique and definitely mysterious. Unfortunately it just took me forever to get through, so I was struggling actually wanting to read this particular book. I think it’s a duology and I’ll most like pick up the 2nd to see how the story wraps up.
