A solid 3.5 stars. I will definitely be reaching for that sequel! That ending? omg NOT cool!
We Light Up The Sky by Lilliam Rivera is a YA sci-fi novel that follows three young adults who take on defending Los Angeles, CA from an invading extraterrestrial. The odds are against them as the bunch barely know each other and are facing an e.t. that can morph itself to look human and sound like anyone it interacts with. It has turned LA into an overgrown jungle filled with obedient poisonous subspecies of mountain lions and coyotes and the gang need to find it’s weakness to stop it from taking over the planet.
The story takes place after COVID-19 and uses this as a theme throughout the book, creating a parallel between the virus and the alien. It is a timely novel that I was very excited for, but I did not fall in love with it like I had hoped. The story did not grab my heart due to the lack of connection between the reader and the protagonists. The writing was good, but it felt choppy with each new character narration, it felt like I was left wanting more with each chapter. Also the romance was poorly executed and felt forced. HOWEVER I did enjoy: being able to see the city that I know so well reflected on the page, the latinx representation, and the main message of the story.
"A radical change is about to be imposed on this planet, and to hide from it is to be complicit. She won't be complicit again. She must do something" (Rivera 188).
Let's talk about the positives: Pedro, Rafa and Luna are amazing! I loved them all… separately. Not so sure if they work well as a group? Pedro: an influencer who would never be caught dead wearing the same outfit as the day before; he is loud and talks before thinking, he’s lovable and hilarious. I’ll admit, I loved Pedro instantly from page one and he is my favorite. I connected to him the most from his desire to always look cute and his tendency to rely too much on horoscopes/astrology. I also empathized with Pedro as we’ve both had to deal with racist people at work/life (on one too many occasions). Rafa: is quiet and keeps to himself; an introvert not by choice, but due to the immense responsibility he feels to take care of his family and keep up with family expectations. I related to Rafa as he struggled to uphold family expectations and respected his need to protect his little sister. Luna: who has chosen to close herself off from those who love her and hide behind a mask of superficial friends. She grieves the loss of her cousin in silence. She is also smart and independent; she doesn’t listen to what the guys have to say, instead she goes with what her mind tells her is the right thing to do. Her ability to brave everything the crazy alien storm throws at her was admirable. They’re all amazing individuals and relatable, but they did not ever click in my opinion as a group and it was a bit disappointing.
Though our cast of heroes did not click, I loved the representation and the fact that the main characters represented real Latinx young adults and their struggles! I loved that, it’s something so rare ro read and seeing it was amazing! As I mentioned, I empathize with Pedro as he had to deal with racist people at work. The scene features Pedro working the In-n-Out drive thru line. A car rolls up with two obnoxious teens asking for burritos. Pedro keeps his cool and says they must be confused, but these customers push him further. Pedro easily makes a witty comeback which I applauded and revealed in his ability to shut them up. So many times I have wished I could’ve said the right thing to the same type of people, but most of the time you gotta just stay quiet. There are other scenes like this pointing out how unfair it is that we are quickly pointed out and misjudged due to our ethnicity or race. Having these scenes and this book gives me a sense of relief, like “hey I see you and maybe one day this won't happen again, but until then your struggle is heard.”
I also appreciated how the author practically yelled out through her book that police brutality will not be left unchecked. Most of racist moments depicted featured cops, bringing to light how often skin color is all that is seen by the police force. How quickly can a cop forget that he is pointing a gun at a young teenager with his whole life ahead of him? Very quickly. Moments like this are depicted multiple times and there are allusions made to a specific shooting: on March 29th 2021 13-year old Adam Toledo was shot and killed by Chicago Police. It is never stated specifically but I’m pretty sure this is what the author was referencing.
This book was also a lot of fun. As I read it I felt transported to my city of angels. I vividly read about the observatory by Griffith park, the Beverly Center, and the Eggslut restaurant! Ultimately, I did not like the characters as a group as I felt there wasn’t a strong connection between them. This was due in part to the ominous tone and also in part to the multiple pov narration. Also the romance aspect of the book felt like it was too rushed. I love the idea of it and hope that if there is a sequel that this is more developed. If anything though this book would be a great conversation starter in school!

Initial Reaction: This book is, relatable, funny, adorable and amazing!
You’ve heard of, “ A dream is a wish your heart makes”, and of “Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo”. Now get ready for, “ Look to the stars. Aim. Ignite.” Once upon a time there lived a young girl, Danielle Wittimer, Elle for short, she had a lovely mother and father who were huge geeks and fans of the show Starfield. Elle loses her mother when she is very young, but she gains a new mother, Catherine and with her she brings her twin daughters, Chloe and Calliope. It isn’t until one fateful day that her stepmother and her stepsisters reveal their true colors, the day Elle loses her father. Elle spends her days going through the motions; waking up to make the coffee for the “stepmonster” and makes breakfast for the twins to then set off for work at the Magic Pumpkin (a food truck). She comes home with more house work waiting for her; she does the grocery shopping, the cooking, the cleaning. Her stepsisters are no help at all as Chloe makes her school life just as miserable as her home life. Elles’ only escape is Starfield, a retro show that tells the “ story about the good ship Prospero and it’s crew as they fight to protect the galaxy…” (Poston 27). The show is Elle's’ way of still being connected to her dad, so when she can she watches reruns of the show and blogs about it on her website, Rebelgunner. She dreams of one day getting out of the clutches of the stepmonster and becoming a screenwriter; those dreams seem live in a far off future until, the announcement is made about the Starfield reboot! Elle has been waiting for this reboot for so long, but finally Starfield will be on the big screen! This then leads to the produces of the movie to work with ExcelsiCon which creates the cosplay competition that Elle can compete to win tickets to the ExcelsiCon masquerade ball, to have a meet and greet with the lead character, plus tickets to the premiere of the movie. This is every fangirls dream! For Elle this means her ticket to freedom, LA, one step closer to being a screenwriter. The only problem about this announcement is that Darien Freeman is playing the lead.
Once upon a time, there was a young boy named Darien Freeman, a young heartthrob who was making his way through Hollywood and was now playing in the big leagues. Darien is about to play the role of his dreams, Federation Prince Carimindor, the lead of his favorite show, Starfield. The only problem is no one knows just how geeky he is. There is no way he could ever let anyone know that, it would mess up his image, or so his dad--sorry Mark (his manager)-- makes him believe. So now Darien has to pretend to be someone he’s not as he tries to play the biggest role he’s played in his career, another issue for him. As the heartthrob of the show Seaside Cove, everyone (in particular the fandom of Starfield) is unhappy about the casting decisions and there are very low expectations about him as an actor. As if things couldn’t get any worse, he has to attend a convention as part of the promo tour for the movie. Darien does not do conventions not since the incident. How is Darien going to get out of this?
Now let us get into the good stuff! ----WARNING SPOILERS DEAD AHEAD!-----
We’ve all read Cinderella or seen the Disney movie, so the general plot of this story is well known and expected. Except Geekerella is better! First, Elle, she isn’t just a housemaid but she is a hardworking student who has dreams that are more than about prince charming, although I will say there is a very good prince charming in the story, but this is not ultimate goal for Elle. Second, I love how contemporary this is, Ashley Poston made the Starfield fandom up, but it has a lot of parallels to the present; making it really relatable to fangirls from all over. Third of all the ending. Now I say that Geekerella is a better Cinderella story because Elle is very relatable to me; versus the Disney version or any version until this point. She is a young girl who is just trying to get by in the world that she feels so alone in. She feels alone, except for when she is watching or blogging about Starfield. This strong connection to her fandom is something that I found very realistic and relatable, especially in today's age in which fandoms thrive. Her fandom is like her family and I find this really relatable because I saw myself as Elle. I have that same love for so many of my fandoms and it’s just this unexplainable feeling that you get when you rewatch a series or movie or reread a series or book that you just love! It’s almost like you’re home. Also, I really appreciated how Poston was able to embody the idea of a fangirl into Elle, without any exaggerations. Elle is simply a passionate girl, just because she has a passion for a show that is considered “geeky” doesn’t make the passion weird or unimportant. This message was very nicely strung throughout the story as we saw how Elle grows and learns to love herself and understand that she really isn’t alone. Darien also grows a character as he struggles with confidence issues, but like Elle he realizes that he is strong enough and that he can do anything just like the Carminidor. Before these two solve their problems they do go through some bumps, but that is what makes this relationship believable. The way Poston initiated this love connection between Elle and Dariene was very creative and clever, as the love connection began like any other geek would fall in love. What better feeling is there other than being a part of a fandom? That feeling when you’re able to connect with someone who has that same passion! The two find each because Elle's’ father started ExcelsiCon and with her fathers passing Elle was left his phone (another way for her stepmother to torture her), so when Darien is looking for the director of Excelsicon he ends up talking to Elle. The thing is neither Darien or Elle say who they are, their conversations are completely anonymous. After many text messages later they tell each other their names, but for the most part they weren’t very intimate. They talk on and off about Starfield, but then they confide in each other as they feel very comfortable with each other. Which is why they’re connection is so cute; they just seem to click as they joke around with each other and be awkward! Then of course there is the big cosplay competition. So what ends up happening is that after the HUGE struggle (thanks to her step sister Chloe in particular) to make the costume, Elle makes it to the convention with the new best friend Sage. She makes it inside despite Chloes best efforts to prevent her from getting to the convention because the twins run a vlog and are trying to get famous by winning the competition and meeting Darien, who they love because of his soap opera show Seaside Cove. Despite it all Elle wins 2nd place and gets to go to the ball. There at the masquerade ball-one of my favorite parts of the story- it all clicks for Darien, he realizes who Elle is and there is where the magic happens. Darien protects Elle from Chloe who attacks her at the ball and runs after her as she tries to make it back home on time! Oh the drama of it all! Aside from the romance being well crafted, the genre itself was well developed as Poston made it clear that this story took place in the present. This was evident due to the references and the environment that Poston would use; making the story very relatable. There were times when references would be made to male actors of today like Ryan Reynolds or Chris Evans/ Pine/ Hemsworth making the image and message very clear. There were also references made that mainly only fans of a certain fandom would recognize that made the book more appealing. Some examples include the Princess Bride in which, Sage (Elles’ bff) shouts after Elle and says, “Have fun storming the castle!”, as Elle leaves to go talk to the director of the convention to get tickets; There are also plenty of other references that comic nerds (Marvel and DC) will love, that Star Wars and Star Trek fans will relate to, and many more for those who love and have experienced any convention!
Before I move on to my love for Starfield, let me just express my love for Sage!
Once upon a time there was young girl with hair as green as her name, Sage. She works along the side of Elle in the Magic Pumpkin, the two have never really talked before, but soon they become the best of friends. Sage is the equivalent to the Cinderellas’ fairy godmother as well as the little mice friends; all wrapped up in a spunky, loud, proud fashionista package; with a sweet center. Sage is by far one of my favorite characters because when I get mad at Elle for not talking about her feelings or confiding in someone who is there for her (like Sage) Sage pushes Elle to speak her mind and to just go for it! Sage is the support that Elle needed and she is a really great friend, but she is also a really great representative of the LGBTQ community. Yes, Sage is a lesbian, and I felt that her character really demonstrated how literature has grown! Rarely do I ever read a book that is so open and I feel like it is long overdue. This is the reality we live in and we should be accepting of everyone no matter their race, gender, religion or sexual identity. I am all for Sage and Calliope! --Yup thats right you read that sentence correctly, in this story one of the step sisters turns out to not be too bad; Calliope in the end helps Elle with the cosplay competition. I wonder what their ship name would be? Sagiope? Callage? Hmm?
Ultimately this story had a real message that is great for the modern fangirl. The story tells us of how we should be unafraid to express ourselves or to love what we love. Also it sent the message of having your priorities in order. At the end Elle and Darien start to date because they know each other well and they want get to know each other better, but Elle is hesitant because her life at school is just starting and so is her career. She thinks about how Darien would be really busy too, so is it really smart of her to be dating any one right now, let alone a movie star? Ultimately she decides she wants to date him because she cannot see a world with Darien and she doesn’t want to live in that world. Not your traditional, “Happily ever after” that's for sure. As a whole I really enjoyed this read. It was a quick one, in fact I really took my time to read it, so I could enjoy it. I found that the characters were both relatable and lovable, the plot was very refreshing and it had a great message. The only thing that bugs me is this one character, Brian, I really don’t know what his deal was. He was supposed to be Darien's bff, but he ends up selling embracing photos of Darien and then ends up being a weird stalker toward the end. I saw the purpose of this character, but I really could’ve lived without him.
Other than this one character I really loved the book as a whole, again great message, very fun, refreshing and it had some very lovable characters and I give it 4.5/ 5 stars ★★★★⭑
Have you ever felt like there were a pair of eyes watching you? Or have you ever sworn that you saw some sort of apparition float by you as you sat in your bed reading?? Don’t be afraid, as Sunny Sibel can tell you they’re just lost souls waiting to move on. Yes, Sunny Sibel, a young 17 year old girl from Everbloom. Your ordinary teen with the power to see ghosts! Sunny has had her powers for as long as she can remember and with these powers she tries her best to help those spirits she sees to move on or to at least comfort them. She takes time out of her everyday to visit these lost spirits, but then one of her regular visits is thrown for a loop when she finds a stranger instead. There she finds, Degory Alden, Captain of Division 6 of Eden; also known as Heaven. From that point on Sunny learns more about life after death than she ever thought she would, but she also learns a lot about herself along the way.
Waiting a Lifetime by Samantha Markham first grabbed my interest by the idea of being a young girl and having the ability to see and talk to ghost; because of A) I am a young girl and B) I swear I feel like I see ghost all the time haha
Dragons and time travel. (WARING SOME SPOILERS BUT VERY VAGUE)
This is all you need to know about Scorched, the first book of its series, written by Mari Mancusi; who takes you on a wild journey filled with adventure and mystical creatures. Intrigued? If you want more, please read on!
Mancusi tells the story of Trinity, an ordinary girl (or so she thinks) who lives with her grandfather and helps run an old dinosaur museum. The museum is in danger of being closed down, but then it seems that Trinitys grandfather might have found a way to save the museum with a new exhibit; a dragon egg exhibit.
At this point Trinity cannot believe what she is hearing or seeing, the egg is amazing in design and size, but she still can’t help but be skeptical as her grandfather has been duped before. It isn’t until she hears a voice. A voice that seemingly comes from nowhere, it’s all in her head she thinks, but really it's the egg.
From this point on Trinity struggles with the idea that she can not only talk to dragons, but that she may be the cause of some terrible future where dragons thrive, but humans scramble to survive. She has to determine whether she should listen to Connor or to Caleb. Twin brothers who are both fighting for a different cause, one that could either save the world and kill the dragon or save the dragon and destroy the world.
I fell in love with this book! It’s a fast paced story that will have have you up late at night saying, ‘Just one more chapter”.
First thing that really got me was that I found it for a good price and I found the cover to be very enticing. It has a huge dragon beside a kick ass heroine character, I just knew I had to have it. ( I know you’re not supposed to judge a book by it’s cover but it’s really hard to say no to dragons!) However, a book cover is only as good as the story inside, I was not disappointed as I was instantly thrown into the story.
The story line works from different point of views, based on Trinity, Connor, and Caleb. This was a really great way of working in the different stories held by each character. Plus it was a really great way to get into the heads of the other characters, warning this will lead to a roller coaster of emotions as you go from loving Connor to hating Caleb to then loving Caleb and hating Connor. This is because the majority of the story is told from the point of view of Trinity, who is unaware of what the future holds for her, while both Connor and Caleb are from 200 years into the future.
The brothers grew up learning about Trinity and how she was the one who first fought for dragon rights. It is becuase of Trinity that the world is in chaos, according to Connor, who travels back in time to prevent the chaos. While Caleb travels back in time to try and help Trinity and the dragons, as he believes that the dragons are misunderstood. As we are learning about the future from Trinitys point of view it is difficult to decide who should be trusted. This trust is very much conflicted with Trinitys feelings for both Caleb and Connor. Should she listen to Connor, the boy who she felt an instant connection to? Should she listen to Caleb, the boy who slowly changed her mind?
This love triangle is only the tip of the iceberg as Trinity discovers more and more about her future. She is the ‘dragon kissed’, meaning that she and the dragon inside of the egg are destined to be together, they are meant to be by each others side for as long the other is alive. This creates a giant rift in Trinitys plans as she grows to care for the egg and the dragon inside. She then decides that she controls her own future and helps with the hatching of the egg, this then leads to a new friendship with her baby dragon, Emmy. Having this drastic change really defined Trinity, I really appreciated how Mancusi developed this character, she showed the struggle Trinity had within herself and then showed how she overcame her inner struggles.
All in all Mancusi created a world filled with action, adventure, dragons, romance and time travel.
