Cornlia Funke was one of my favorite childhood authors and reading this reminded me of why I loved her so much. Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favorite films so when I saw that there was a novelization, I knew I wanted to read it. The book is beautiful with wonderful illustrations and expanded lore. It is such a beautiful, tragic story and I think Funke captured it well. Definitely felt like the younger side of YA (maybe 13-14 year olds) while the film feels more adult-ish.
Read this for one of my classes. Very interesting in that I didn’t know a whole lot about WWII in the Pacific. I don’t have any strong feelings about this memoir, but the last couple sections were the best (and toughest to read)
I didn’t quite enjoy this as much as Heroes of Tolkien. Some of the theories felt a little repetitive and there were several things I didn’t quite agree with. Still full of great insights and theories to some on the best ‘Dark Powers’ fantasy has to offer.
I LOVED THIS
80s boarding school girl who can do magic and talk to fairies while being obsessed with Sci-Fi and Fantasy books!
Disability rep! Journal format! Found family trope! Evil mom! Wales! The Fae!
The blurb for this book makes is seem heavy in the magic part, but 80% of this book is either about boarding school or about other books. Mori's internal thoughts and dialogue are on one hand a gem, but at (many) other points I wanted to just give her a hug and tell her everything will be alright. My only complaint is that I wish we got to see more of what her evil mom 'did' to start the events of this book. I feel like we never really learn the details. Also the ending was a little anti-climatic, but I loved the books and school parts so much that it didn't really bother me that much.
I'm getting a little tired of multiple pov books, but this one was so nice and refreshing to have one pov, but still maintain well developed side characters, who I didn't necessarily need to know their thoughts to connect to and enjoy.

4-4.5/5 stars-
Ok this was really good! The world building is fantastic and is a Mediterranean inspired world that is super diverse. Any fantasy that is a) diverse b) has lgbt main characters and c) is not set in a patriarchal society has all my support. Reading fantasy books like this is so refreshing and keeps on raising my expectations for the genre.
The premise is very interesting and the world is just fantastic. Greco-Roman, Egyptian and European cultures are all represented along with some cool magic systems and an evil religious figure! My only real complaint is how fast paced this story is and how much stuff happens. I generally like slower paced, character driven stories but that is just a personal preference. I can't believe we have to wait 6 months for the next one! I want it now!!
