Shout by Laurie Halse Anderson

I was disappointed that it was in verse but Laurie was able to make it very prose like. I am happy to know her better and proud to see how many people she has helped. The helplines in the back of the book are a great touch and I hope they reach the right people.

My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh

This book was very compelling. A different kind of story. This narrator was so unbelievably unlikable and yet i liked her. Going to check out more of Moshfegh’s work for sure
You Can't Touch My Hair: And Other Things I Still Have to Explain by Phoebe Robinson

Really fun and informative. I like that her voice is so unique to her, but it gets a little much at times with all the abbreviations. Still I think she does great work and i appreciate her POV.

Such a good writer, and every essay is full of nuance. I wish I could assign books to everyone I know— this one would definitely make the list.
Ain't I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism by bell hooks

“Oftentimes I am asked by black women to explain why I would call myself a feminist and by using that term ally myself with a movement that is racist. I say, ‘The question we must ask again and again is how can racist women call themselves feminists.’”
Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Really good stuff. It really felt like the band was real. I was skeptical but it’s a really good and fast read. I will miss these people in an Almost Famous kind of way.
The Summer of Jordi Perez by Amy Spalding

Really cute love story. A little too happily-ever-after at the end— id like to hear more about Abby’s struggles with self esteem (as I’m in my 30s and I still haven’t mastered it, personally). But it was a fun read to kick off the summer.
The Lost Night by Andrea Bartz

This was average. The narrator is basically my age and the way she talked about 2009 was... a bit much. Another debut about living in NYC and thinking you’re better than others because of it. Also not loving the depiction of gay men in the book. Not a bad twist at the end, though.
The Rest of the Story by Sarah Dessen

Love Sarah Dessen’s worlds. Always a good easy nice read. Miss the days when she used to not have the teen end up with someone since that so rarely happens in real life. Also not loving that people who were just a few years older than me in 1999 are parents now 😬
All You Can Ever Know by Nicole Chung

A really moving story and one that makes you look a little deeper into adoption. I’ve followed Nicole’s writing on and off for years, it’s nice to get such an intimate peek into her personal life.
