I enjoy the urban fantasy setting of this series. Overall pretty good, but once again some of the treatment of Mercy's indigenous heritage has not aged well.

This was a really fun fantasy romp. The main character is really strong and I appreciate that they minimize her "strong woman" stereotyping.

Biggest criticism is some of the discussion around the MCs indigenous heritage has NOT aged well.

The plot was a bit hard to follow, but I really liked the characters and it started me on a binge of the series, so...

This book was like a balm for my heart. It made me nostalgic for places I’ve never been and people who don’t exist. The story is a love letter to the people who stick with you through thick and thin even when your lives are completely different. Told in turns from past to present, this is almost a perfect romance in my opinion: it’s heart-achingly sweet without being trite and tense without being dramatic. Not to mention the banter is really funny. There is some open-door spice.

It does rely a bit on miscommunication, but I felt it worked because there are real, character-driven reasons they don’t tell each other some things, and it’s not just that they’re mad or throwing a fit.
My only criticism is that the ending got a little long, but there are so many (very well-developed) characters, with hopes and challenges of their own, and each gets their moment to cry and grow, so I will forgive it.

Overall fantastic, would highly recommend. It’s the kind of book I wish I could re-read for the first time.
